The beat of my blog is school spirit and since school spirit is typically showed at sports games, I sought out a journalist that primarily covers University of Michigan sporting events. Angelique S. Chengelis is a sports writer for The Detroit News and is a University of Michigan football beat writer.
Chengelis is a Cincinnati native, but according to her twitter, loves her new adopted home, Detroit. She is very active on twitter, keeping fellow tweeters up-to-date on everything that has to do with UM football and publishes articles via The Detroit News several times Daily (of course the number of articles increases on days where UM actually has a football game).
Her most recent articles cover the UM-OSU game from Saturday, 11/28/15 -a tragic game for the Wolverines.
Her article about Jerry Hanlon’s OSU-week letter interested me the most of these four shown in the picture above, since it talked about a tradition that a former Michigan-assistant coach did, and still does, during such a big rivalry week in college football. He shares a letter to UM football players on the eve of the OSU-UM football game, and does so annually. The Detroit News published his letter to this year’s players, which drew parallels between this year’s team and Hanlon’s team in 1969. The letter was inspiring and brought out the Michigan spirit that lies within me.
Excerpt from Hanlon’s letter:
She also did a great job of keeping fans updated during yesterday’s game by live-tweeting the entire event. For an undergraduate student that never has cellular reception in the Big House, I saw this as a huge feat!
After doing this research on Chengelis, I decided to reach out to her via Email to ask her a few more questions about her experience with UM Football and journalism as a whole. Here is a copy of the email I sent to her – if I get a response (fingers crossed!) I will update my blog with her information.
